What are NDIS Core Supports?

The NDIS takes a goals-based approach to funding and services, meaning the services available to you or your loved one will vary depending what you need help to achieve.
Of the 15 support categories of the NDIS, the NDIS Core Supports consists of four funding categories that help you or your loved one develop foundational life skills, which help with daily activities and community participation.

The four NDID core supports categories are:

Assistance with daily life

Accessing transport

Accessing consumables

Assistance with community participation

1. Assistance with daily life

The NDIS core supports that are categorised under assistance with daily life aim to empower people with disabilities to lead independent lives. This support category helps participants to:

  • Make decisions for the household
  • Develop self-care skills, such as bathing
  • Prepare meals
  • Undertake domestic duties

2. Accessing transport

The ‘Transport’ category of the NDIS core supports helps cover transport costs associated with specialised schooling or education programs, reaching your place of employment or participating in other community or recreational activities.

3. Accessing consumables

Consumables is an NDIS core supports category that helps cover the cost of everyday items and services that empower the participant to lead an independent life. These could include things such as:

  • Interpreting and translation devices
  • Continence items, such as nappies and pull-ups
  • Home enteral nutrition
Food and swallowing equipment, such as water syringes

4. Assistance with social and community participation

The final NDIS core supports category, Assistance with social and community participation, helps fund activities or courses that help participants socialise and connect with others. These could include:

  • Art classes
  • Sports coaching
  • Vacation camps

Community recreation activities
