Victoria Vaccination Priority Access

Vaccination Blitz

The Victorian Government has announced a vaccination blitz to ensure that disability support workers are given priority access at vaccination hubs. The priority access will be available from today (Wednesday 2nd June) until Sunday for all walk-in vaccinations hubs from 9am to 4pm. Staff are eligible for either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines depending on their age, with the Government has expanding the clinics that Pfizer is available. Priority access will be ensured by active queue management. Hubs include:

  • Royal Exhibition Building
  • Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)
  • Sandown Racecourse
  • Melbourne Showgrounds
  • Former Ford Factory – Geelong
  • Bendigo Community Clinic
  • Ballarat Mercure Hotel and Convention Centre
  • Shepparton Showgrounds – McIntosh Centre
  • Traralgon Racecourse
  • Wodonga Vaccination Hub

Employees will be required to take ID and information staff on site that they are a priority worker. Additional information on walk-in hubs and other sites including contact details and opening times are available on the DHS website.

Victoria COVID-19 Update

Victoria COVID-19 Update.

Nextt is committed to continuity of essential services support to all our clients and the safety and wellbeing of all employees.

The Victorian Government has announced that from 11:59pm on Thursday 27 May until 11:59pm on Thursday 03 June 2021 there are five reasons that people can leave home

  • shopping for necessary goods and services
  • authorised work or permitted education
  • exercise, a 2-hour limit with one other person
  • care giving, compassionate, and medical reasons
  • To get vaccinated

Nextt will continue to provide services in line with this advice. All workers will be provided surgical masks and will wear them during the provision of support to you/your loved one.

Nextt have been working hard nationally to keep all clients we support safe and well at this time. This includes:

  • Infection Control Training
  • Daily National Briefings to stay on top of state and medical advice
  • Responsive communication to our workforce on their obligations to keep you safe
  • Provision of PPE to workers

Currently, NDIS plans are reviewed after the first 12 months, and every two years thereafter. However, circumstances can change significantly over the span of two years, and Nextt recommends that clients be more proactive in scheduling their own reviews and changing plans as those circumstances change. The Nextt INDIE platform was developed to help make this process easier and encourage clients to regularly self-assess and proactively monitor their progress and circumstances.

In short, Nextt INDIE gives us clarity on each customer’s individual goals, transparency on whether we are supporting them to achieve those goals, and therefore greater accountability for delivering measurable improvements in their quality of life. NDIS Core Supports Explained

Understanding the Core Supports available to you through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be tricky. NDIS base their approach to funding on goals, therefore the services available to you or your loved one will vary depending on what you need to achieve.

What are NDIS Core Supports?

Core Supports are put in place to assist with everyday activities. They are the main support category that helps you to access and participate within your community. NDIS Core Supports are flexible, meaning you can use your funding across any of the support items and services within your Core budget.

Core Supports fit into four categories, including, assistance with daily life, consumables, assistance with social community participation, and transport.

Assistance with Daily Life

Assistance with Daily Life is designed to empower you to live your life as independently as possible. It can assist in covering the cost of hiring someone to support you with activities such as personal care or other domestic tasks such as cooking and cleaning. Core Supports are not restricted to at-home support, there is access available for support in the community for social and work reasons, during school, TAFE, or university, or even while on holiday.


Consumables can assist with the purchase of everyday items including assistive products for safety and personal care, low-cost Assistive Technology (AT), interpreting and translation education or services, and other innovative supports.

Assistance with Social and Community Participation

Assistance with social and community participation supports you to engage in social or recreational activities and become more involved in the local community.  You can receive support in various settings, such as sporting, art classes, school, university, TAFE, or other educational facilities.


Transport funding helps you travel to work or other places that will help you achieve the goals in your plan such as specialised schooling or education programs, reaching your place of employment, going to university or TAFE, and participating in other community or recreational activities.

What Core Supports will I receive?

Your Core Supports help you with everyday activities, your current disability related needs and support you towards reaching your goals. At Nextt, we offer a variety of services that assist you to develop meaningful skills that will help you live as independently as possible and increase your participation in everyday life.

We have also introduced Nextt Indie, which is a platform that provides the tools needed to capture your goals and measure your progress in meeting them. Allowing to improve the effectiveness in the NDIS Core Supports that we provide.

Understanding Supported Independent Living

Deciding where to live is one of the most important choices in your life. With many supported independent living options funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) it can become confusing. At Nextt, we pride ourselves in creating a unique Supported Independent Living (SIL) model for you that aligns with your NDIS plan.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living  is about the supports you receive to help you live as independently as possible. It includes the support and assistance you may need to complete tasks around the home. This may include personal care such as showering and dressing, planning meals and cooking, cleaning the living space, as well as shopping for personal items and groceries and getting out in your local community.

The aim of this service is to help develop your skills so you can live as independently as possible. You may use SIL funding for support when living in a place you privately rent, a home you own, a home which is shared with others or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) if it is included in your NDIS funding package.

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

SDA funding can assist you if you need specialist housing solutions. SDA houses are designed for people who meet certain eligibility criteria and require very high support needs.

If you are approved for SDA, your funding is used to cover the cost of the housing and cannot be used for any other purpose. If you receive funding for SDA, you will also have SIL funding, as they work together to give you the opportunity to choose how and where you live.

Supported Independent Living Vaccination Roll Out

The Australian government has begun its roll out of the COVID-19 Vaccine.

The past year has been a difficult one for many Australians. The team at Nextt would like to acknowledge the difficult times we have experienced and thank you for working with us as we have had to adjust services in line with government advice.

The Australian government has begun its roll out of the COVID-19 Vaccine. The government has communicated that the vaccine is free, safe and voluntary. Priority populations have been set up based on risk. Amongst the first groups to receive this vaccination are those receiving Supported Independent Living services.

The plan provided by the government is for teams of health employees to visit SIL and supply the vaccine to those who have consented to receive it.

We have written to our SIL clients/family/representatives this week to provide them with the information they need to make this decision and to record their decision and provide to the vaccination teams.

Once you have made this decision, please let us know so we can ensure your decision is respected. This can be by written confirmation on whether you do or do not wish either yourself, or your loved one to receive this vaccination.

Victoria Covid lockdown to end at midnight

Congratulations Victoria for the end of the five-day lockdown!

Victoria’s five-day lockdown ends at midnight on Wednesday, February 17.  Some restrictions will still remain, including masks, private gatherings and hospital visits.

A career as a support worker

A career as a disability support worker can be challenging. It’s also an extremely rewarding career path where you’ll make a real difference and add value to people’s lives.

What’s more, since the launch of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), thousands of new support worker jobs have been created, with ongoing opportunities for the future.

Why should I consider a career as a support worker?

As a disability support worker, you’ll make a positive difference in other people’s lives. If you like variety, you can expect each day as a support worker to be different and offer an abundance of learning experiences.

It may not always be easy but the joy of supporting others will keep you interested and motivated. 

Being a support worker also offers great work-life balance, where you can work hours to suit your schedule. There are plenty of job opportunities, with an 70,000 new NDIS support worker jobs expected in the next three years alone.

What will the job consist of?

The amount of assistance you’ll provide will vary depending on the abilities and the health of the person you’re working with.

A disability support worker provides daily personal, physical, and emotional support.

Daily tasks in a support worker role could consist of: developing programs to support clients to develop the skills they need to live independently; organising and going on social outings; completing household tasks; being a companion and offering support during daily activities; helping people with disability maintain contact with family and friends; and helping develop and maintain independence and safety in personal care, health care and hygiene.

 What qualifications and experience do I need?

Anyone with the passion and drive to help others can become a disability support worker, even if you do not have any previous experience or qualifications. Completing a Certificate III and IV in Disability Work can improve your employment opportunities and may also lead to management and team leader roles with organisations such as Nextt.

Victorian COVID-19 restrictions

Victorian Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions

Nextt provides essential disability support services to our valued participants. Services will continue with the following additional restrictions in place:

  • Documentation All employees have been issued Essential Services Letters.
  • Support Workers Infection Prevention and Control – Support Workers have been issued with PPE, i.e. surgical mask, will observe physical distancing where possible, practice universal infection control, handwashing.
  • Shifts – activities during the shift should be in line with government advice and be for one of the four reasons stipulated
  • Shopping for necessary goods and services (one person per household, once per day, a support person can accompany if required)
  • Caregiving or compassionate reasons
  • Essential work or permitted education
  • Exercise (can leave for two hours of exercise)

Lockdown will end midnight Wednesday at this stage.

Tips to reach your NDIS goals

One of the most important things you need to do when preparing for your planning meeting is to think about your current and future goals.

Goals are the things you want to achieve through the support of your disability services provider.

Your goals might include a range of different things, such as becoming more independent, learning new skills, enrolling in a course or training, becoming more active in the community or building your relationships with friends and family.

To make sure your NDIS plan really benefits you, you should try to make your goals as specific as possible.


Clearly defining your goals

Clearly defining your goals from the beginning will help ensure your NDIS plan reflects the supports you need to achieve your objectives.

Your goals can be broken down into short-term goals – that can usually be achieved in under 12 months – and medium to long-term goals that may take a number of years to achieve.

Examples of short-term goals might include:

  • Using public transport by yourself to go to the shops
  • Starting a course
  • Going out with friends

Examples of medium-term goals might include:

  • Developing your communication skills
  • Finding a job
  • Developing better social skills.
  • Joining community groups

Examples of long-term goals might include:

  • Moving out of home and getting a place of your own
  • Maintaining or improving your health.
  • Becoming more independent.
  • Building the skills needed to learn better at school or university.

Talk to an NDIS representative

You will be in contact with an NDIS representative at different stages of your NDIS journey.  NDIS representatives will provide you with guidance on things like registering with the NDIS scheme and conducting scheduled reviews of your plan.  Your NDIS representative can also offer general support on how best to bring your NDIS plan to life.


Get support from an NDIS Support Coordinator

NDIS Support Coordinators can support you to get the most from the NDIS scheme.

Don’t wait to review your plan

Your plan will be reviewed at regular intervals to make sure you are on track to achieving your goals and that your goals are still relevant. The NDIS website states that “it is expected that your first plan review will take place after your first 12 months in the scheme. Plan reviews can then be scheduled up to two years apart dependent on personal circumstances and goals.”

A lot can happen in two years. If your goals change between your scheduled reviews, you should consider reviewing your plan yourself, and advise the NDIS if you wish to change it. Continual self-assessment will ensure your plan stays relevant to your changing situation.

Getting the most out of your NDIS plan is about knowing where you are at personally and seeking expert support when you need it.
