Looking after yourself through COVID lockdown

Looking after your physical and mental health through lockdown.

At Nextt, we understand that COVID lockdown can sometimes make us worried and anxious.

It is important that we look after our thoughts and feelings as well as our bodies.  Following are a few hints and tips on things we can do to stay well through lockdown.

Keep in touch with people

Try to make sure that you keep in touch with people – by talking to friends and family either on the phone or online.

Lots of groups are meeting online or by phone, and you can ask your families or support workers to help you find out how to join in.

Help other people

Helping other people can make both you and the other person feel better. Just sometimes even calling someone for a chat can be a big help. It can make the world of difference for them to know you are simply thinking about them.

Healthy things to do

Eat healthy foods

Drink lots of water

Exercise at home

Things to try to cut back on

Smoking

Drinking too much alcohol

Look after your feelings

If you feel anxious try to think about good things that make you happy. Talk about your worries to someone you trust. That could be your support worker or family and friends

Sometimes it’s good to talk to an expert.

If you are very worried and want to talk to someone in private, you can call:

  • Lifeline – 13 11 14
  • Kids Helpline – 1800 551 800 for young people 5-25 years
  • Suicide Call Back Service – 1300 659 467
  • MensLine Australia – 1300 78 99 78 for men of any age
  • Beyond Blue – 1800 512 348

Think about your new routine

Do:
Make a plan of the things you want to do in the day.
Make sure you get enough sleep.
Don’t:
Look at your mobile or tablet or play video games just before you go to bed.
Drink too much coffee and tea.

Do things you enjoy

Think about things you enjoy that you can do at home. This could be reading, writing, playing games, doing crossword puzzles, jigsaws or drawing and painting.

Find time to relax

Yoga and breathing exercises can help. You can find games and puzzles you can use to relax, as well as breathing exercises that may help online.

Enjoy nature

If you can, go outside to exercise once a day but remember to stay at least 1.5m away from other people. If you have a garden, try to spend time in it.  If you don’t have a garden, you might consider trying to grow a plant in your house or on your windowsill.

Don’t be worried by the news

Only look at the news once or twice a day.
Get the facts. Not all news you hear about coronavirus is true.
You can find information you can trust from the Department of Health
www.health.gov.au

Practical issues

Getting food and medicine
Think about how you can get the things you need.
Only go to the shops when you need to.
If you can, get food delivered.
Try to buy healthy food.
If you have support from other people, ask them to help you.

If you look after others

If you have children, it is important to have a plan about what you might do if you are unwell.
It’s important that your children have a routine and fun things to do too.

Remember to ask for help if you need it.
Talk to your family or usual
supporters or a social worker if you have one.

Look after your body

If you usually take medication, keep taking it.
Get advice from Nurse Oncall (Victoria), Health Direct (NSW/SA) or 13 Health (QLD) if you’re worried about being able to get your medication. Phone: 1800 022 222
They can help if you feel sick and can’t get to your GP too.

If you think you have coronavirus you should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital as you could pass it on to others. Get advice from the coronavirus hotline: 1800 675 398.
If you are very ill you should call 000 for help.

If you have any further questions, you can call the office to talk to someone. Our phone number is 1300 369 568.

How to Apply to the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an incredible initiative designed to aid Australians living with disability access support they need to improve their quality of life. However, understanding if you are eligible for NDIS funding, and the requirements can become tricky.

At Nextt we have put together a helpful checklist as a guide to ensure you receive the support you deserve!

Here is what you need to do to access NDIS funding:

  1. Check if you are eligible for NDIS funding
To obtain access to NDIS funding, you or your loved one must meet the requirements on the NDIS Eligibility Checklist. The criteria questions include:
  • Are you aged between 7 and 65?
  • Do you live in Australia and have Australian residency?
  • Do you usually need support from a person due to a permanent and significant disability?
  • Do you use special equipment because of a permanent and significant disability?

Do you need some supports now to reduce your future needs?

2. Request Access
If you do not currently receive disability supports but wish to join the scheme, you will need to contact the NDIS to complete an Access Request Form. You can contact NDIS on 1800 800 110 to make a verbal access request or download and complete the Access Request Form and email it to the NDIA with supporting information. Please visit ‘What is an Access Request Form?’ to download an access form or visit ‘Applying to access the NDIS’ for more information.

3. Know your entitlements
There are various categories of NDIS funding, all of which cover supports in achieving different outcomes, so it is important that you are provided with the right disability services that suit your individual needs.

4. Provide information about your disability

You should seek support from your healthcare practitioners to fill out the relevant paperwork stating your diagnosis and ongoing needs. Providing good evidence of disability will support the NDIA to make a decision regarding your eligibility for the NDIS. Good evidence should be:

  • Recent
  • Completed by a treating health professional.
  • Confirms your primary disability.
  • Confirms the impacts of your disability on different areas of your life.
  • Describes previous treatments and outcomes.
  • Describes future treatment options and expected outcomes of those treatments.

The health professionals should know which assessments or reports they need to provide. The NDIA provides a list of relevant assessments that professionals can use (and which you may need to get).

If you need help to get your evidence together Local Area Coordinators (LAC) can help you.

5. Contact an NDIS Support Service Provider
One of the most efficient ways to access NDIS funding is by getting in touch with an NDIS approved support provider. At Nextt, we aim to empower our clients to live happy, independent lives. As an NDIS-registered provider, we provide a range of capacity and skill-building programs and individual supports that are tailored to meet the unique needs of our clients.

Get in touch with our dedicated NDIS support coordinator team at Nextt to find out how we can help you and your family access NDIS Funding. Contact us on 1300 369 568.

How to Choose a Disability Support Provider

How to choose a Disability Support Provider?

Choosing the right disability support services is an important decision that should not be taken for granted. Knowing you have an organisation that supports your needs and works to build a relationship with you can make this seemingly difficult process a lot smoother and will save you time and frustration.

Tips to choosing the right disability service provider:

1. Research: Have a look at a range of providers and see if they offer the support and services that meet your needs. Make sure you call and talk to their customer support team about your queries and to see if their disability support services are suited for you.

2. Reputation: Seek recommendations through family or friends, or by googling their organisation to understand their credibility. Have a look at both the organisations Google Reviews and TrustPilot Reviews to help make an informed decision. Make sure you check their service history, their staffs, and ensure that they are a registered NDIS provider.

3. Experience: Your disability support provider must be able to assist you in navigating through the process, and provide the relevant details including clear service agreements, and terms and conditions. You must consider their experience, and ensure they specialise in disability support and plans that meet your goals.

4. Communication: Check to see if your service provider can offer information in your language, and that the information is provided in a format that is accessible to you. You may also want to check that support workers and coordinators speak other languages.

5. Dedicated Customer Care: Your service provider should be able to offer guidance on what you need to know and help you achieve your goals. They should be able to provide clear information on what they offer and how you can access it.

How to change your disability services provider:

Are you unhappy with your current disability services provider? Are looking for a provider that will understand your personal situation, your unique needs, and support you in creating a personalised plan to help you reach your goals?
